Finding Your Style Personality

I was chatting with some colleagues recently about style and shopping. One loved to shop yet when she brought home new items, struggled to incorporate them into her wardrobe and just had a lot of mixed match separates that she didn’t know what to do with. The other wasn’t a fan of shopping as she feels overwhelmed by all the options in the stores and tends to either buy what’s on the mannequin or whatever her latest shipment of Stitch Fix recommends. It struck me that so many women struggle to shop intentionally and strategically because they are unaware of their true Style Personality.

Think of it like this: we use tools such as the DiSC profile assessment or the Enneagram to understand our communication styles and how we interact with others in order to build better, more authentic relationships. We use these tools to help us improve our skills to be more effective in how we communicate in our homes and in our workplaces. When we understand our communication styles and the styles of others, it helps us to craft messages in such a way that will be more impactful. Better received. And thus things tend to go smoother.

It’s the same with style! When we understand our Style Personality, we are better able to:

  1. Choose items that align with that personality which helps us to avoid spending money on pieces that look great at the store, but we struggle to make work when we bring it home

  2. Dress in such a way that exemplifies who we are and enables us to feel more authentic, genuine and confident

  3. Shop more intentionally at the stores and with brands that best align with that style personality type, saving us so much time!

Knowing your Style Personality better equips you to select items that best reflects who you are and how God made you! It simplifies the shopping & selection process and helps to avoid the overwhelm that so many women struggle with when walking into their local mall or shopping online.

As a certified Christian Image Consultant through the Fashion Meets Faith network, we use the Style Personality framework that outlines four key Style Personality Types:

  1. Pure Natural - The woman with this style types likes to keep things simple, comfortable and easy. Her go-to fabrics are cotton, linen and silk. She likes to be comfortable with easy to wear items, loose fit, grab & go type mentality. Her style may be described as ‘comfy cute’ or ‘earthy’ - with simple separates with similar easy to care for fabrics (may be environmentally friendly too). You are not likely to see her in heels yet she tends to gravitate to flats, loafers, pull on sneakers or the occasionally wedge for special occasions. Date night for the Pure Natural is likely to include a nice pair of jeans, cotton tee, a cardigan and simple/minimalistic jewelry. Target stores for the Pure Natural: J.Jill, Athleta, Old Navy, Gap, Target

  2. Classic Modern - The Classic Modern always looks put together! She has primarily basic pieces in her wardrobe yet they tend to be higher quality. She knows what she wants and likes when she walks into a store. She likes clean lines and a well manicured, polished look. She may splurge on the occasional accessory such as the Kate Spade bag or shoes yet still likes a good deal. She has a soft, elegant way about her and is often described as stylish and sophisticated. Date night for the Classic Modern is likely classic denim straight leg jeans (no distressing) with a crisp white button down blouse, a gold layer necklace & hoop earrings, and either a trench or sleek leather jacket. Target stores for the Classic Modern: Banana Republic, Talbots, Chicos, cAbi, Boden

  3. Creative Original - Ahh the Creative Original is one that catches the eye. She has this knack for putting an outfit together using colors, styles and textures that you never dreamed of putting together. She has an artistic flair about her and loves to be daring with her selection of styles. You will likely see a lot of layers, accessories, bold colors and fun cutting edge hand bags or shoes. You are amazed at what she can pull off. A date night for the Creative Original would likely be overalls, a fun red bootie or wedgie heel, a nostalgic military style jacket over a white tee with layers of jewelry. Target stores for the Creative Original: Anthropologie, Free People, local boutiques or vintage shops, thrift stores - literally anywhere!

  4. Style Fashionista - The gorgeous Style Fashionista stands out in the crowd. She is always doting the latest trends before they even hit the stores. She’s a stickler for the details: the puff sleeve, cut out pieces, asymmetrical styles. She can pull together any outfit and look amazing. She is confident in her styling and others look to her for what’s on trend. Her accessories are always exactly on point. Date night for the Style Fashionista would be flare cut jeans with heels, a cold shoulder top with all the details, a sleek vegan leather jacket with a stiff brim hat. Target stores for the Style Fashionista: H&M, White House Black Market, DKNY, Kate Spade.
